Friday Evening 6pm - 10pm
Friday evenings the Goddess of Rock, Tiiu Shelley brings you the finest collection of classic of rock from up and down the decades, so have your air guitar ready!
Get to know Tiiu a little more - We asked her a few questions about herself. See her answers below:
What’s your favourite food?: I could probably live on (good) pizza alone, though I’d never say “no” to a steak and ale pie!
Where is your favourite place in the world: Cape Bonavista, Newfoundland. When I was a kid, driving “down the Cape” was the equivalent of going for a Sunday drive. It was especially the thing to do in summer, when you went for an ice cream and hopefully saw the whales and icebergs and puffins. [BOSS: Sounds awesome!]
What was your first concert: Gowan – Canadian solo superstar in the 80’s, now lead singer / keyboardist for Styx (and still a Canadian superstar!). I was 16 and having been denied going to see him the year before, I had a renewed sense of determination that I wasn’t missing out again. Therefore, I nagged and nagged until my parents convinced their friends (responsible adults!) to take me to the George Street Festival, which is basically a giant beer festival, where he was headlining. It was just him and his piano and a whole lot of stage presence - he was fantastic!! All anyone heard from me in my last year of high school was “Gowan this, Gowan that”, to the point that, even now, 30 years later, I get random messages from people I barely talk to anymore saying “heard Gowan on the radio and thought of you” 😂 (Side note: Some things never change. I last went home to Canada in February…. for a series of Gowan concerts! 😊)
What was the first album/CD you ever bought: Technically I didn’t buy them but, remember when you could buy 13 cassettes from Columbia House for 1p? (well, 1 cent in my case!). My Dad did this when I was 5 or 6 years old and, when the box arrived, I quickly availed myself of Europe’s “The Final Countdown”, AC/DC’s “Back in Black” and Springsteen’s “Born in the USA”. All three remained on my playlist for quite some time, but it was Bruce that stuck. The tape migrated from my bedroom stereo to the car stereo, I took it to university, and I brought it here when I moved to the UK. It was a running joke between Dad and I – whenever I’d see him, he’d ask “when do I get my Springsteen tape back?” On his deathbed, one of the things he said to me in his final days was “well, I guess you can keep the Springsteen tape now.” The tape has long been retired due to overplay and age making Bruce sound more like Tom Waits but, for obvious reasons, it remains one of my prized possessions. [BOSS: 😂😂😂]
What is your all-time favourite song to play on air: Tom Cochrane’s “Life is a Highway”. Back in the day I worked overnights at a station in Toronto and, whenever I was feeling a bit tired, that was my go-to song – it immediately energised me and got me bopping round the studio at 3am! [BOSS: Love that song!]
What song is currently on repeat in your head: “Love or Pain” by The Trews
