Yorkshire Dales Tremor Registered as 2.2 Magnitude Earthquake

15 September 2026

Seismologists and local residents have confirmed a minor 2.2-magnitude earthquake centred near Sedbergh that shook houses across the Western and Northern Dales

The British Geological Survey confirmed the tremor was picked up by monitoring stations across Sedbergh, Ingleton, Selside, Gayle near Hawes, and Skipton.

Residents reported rattling doors, trembling floors, and loud rumbling sounds across Wensleydale and the Howgill Fells.

BGS officers confirmed that no structural damage was caused by the low-level seismic event.
