Ivelet Bridge, the 16th-century crossing near Muker, was closed three weeks ago after a heavy farm vehicle clipped the parapet, causing several large stones to tumble into the River Swale. Local farmers feared a months-long closure, which would have forced a 10-mile detour via Reeth.
However, heritage masons worked through last weekend’s rain to secure the structure. The bridge officially reopened to cars and light vans at 6:00 AM today. While heavy goods vehicles remain banned, the reopening is a massive relief for the Swaledale mountain bike groups and hikers who use the route to access the "Corpse Way" path.
