Families and outdoor swimmers descended on the River Swale in Richmond yesterday in record numbers. The weekend marked the first major holiday since the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs officially granted the stretch Designated Bathing Water Status. The campaign group Save Our Swale noted that public awareness is at an all-time high, with weekly Environment Agency bacteria testing now legally mandated to ensure water safety.
