A high-level political row has erupted following North Yorkshire Council's formal unveiling of the timeline for its unified Local Plan. Opposition planners have publicly attacked newly proposed central Whitehall targets, which legally mandate that the county must find land to accommodate a massive 4,000 new homes every single year—a staggering increase over previous district limits. The comprehensive county-wide plan, set for final statutory adoption by 2029, will completely replace the historic, localised planning rules previously used by the former Craven and Richmondshire district councils. Planners warn that forcing intense urban housing targets onto isolated, infrastructure-starved fells villages will permanently strain rural utilities, schools, and sewage networks that are already suffering from decades of under-investment.
