After a week of laser-scanning and manual "tapping" by rope-access engineers, Network Rail has confirmed that the 1876 masonry is stable. The survey was triggered by concerns over "freeze-thaw" damage from the harsh February frost. The results mean the massive 150th Anniversary Steam Gala in May can proceed with the heaviest locomotives—including the Flying Scotsman—cleared to cross the 24 arches.
