Opposition Leaders Pressure Council Over Rural School Transport Policy

Opposition Leaders Pressure Council Over Rural School Transport Policy

12 August 2026

Pressure is mounting on North Yorkshire Council today as opposition leaders call for the immediate cancellation of the authority's controversial rural school transport policy

The demand follows admissions during recent appeal hearings that council officers used inaccurate digital mapping coordinates and non-existent private footpaths when calculating whether Dales children qualified for free school transport.

Campaigners from the School Transport Action Group argue that the flawed measurement method has unfairly forced rural families to pay thousands of pounds for transport or endure hazardous walking routes along unlit country lanes.

With the Local Government Ombudsman currently investigating over twenty formal injustice complaints, councillors are pressing the authority to reinstate catchment-based transport boundaries.
