North Yorkshire Mayor Emphasizes Proposed £1-a-Night Visitor Levy "Has to Be Done Right"

North Yorkshire Mayor Emphasizes Proposed £1-a-Night Visitor Levy "Has to Be Done Right"

17 September 2026

Metro Mayor David Skaith has issued a public statement today emphasising that any proposed £1-a-night tourism levy across York and North Yorkshire must strictly protect local hospitality businesses

Following an independent policy report proposing a flat £1-a-night levy on overnight stays, Mayor Skaith confirmed today that extensive consultation with Dales B&B owners, pub hoteliers, and campsite operators will take place before any scheme is implemented.

The proposed levy could generate up to £26 million annually to reinvest into rural public transport, public toilets, and heritage infrastructure across the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Mayor Skaith stressed today that any eventual system must be simple to administer and avoid placing administrative burdens on small, family-run accommodation providers in the Dales.
