The Cave Rescue Organisation (CRO) was alerted at 9:15 PM last night after a climber became "crag-fast" on a narrow ledge approximately two-thirds of the way up the face of Malham Cove. The individual had lost their headtorch and was unable to ascend or descend safely in the pitch black.
Due to the technical nature of the limestone face, a Coastguard helicopter from Humberside provided top-down illumination while CRO volunteers performed a complex rope lower. The casualty was eventually brought to the base of the cove at 1:30 AM this morning. Aside from mild hypothermia and a few scrapes, they were given a clean bill of health. The CRO is using this incident to remind climbers that spring nights in the Dales still drop to near-freezing.
