Three oil paintings by Marie Hartley—who co-wrote the definitive books on the Dales in the 1930s—were purchased at auction this week. They depict traditional sheep shearing and a Dales kitchen. The museum says these are "priceless" because they capture a way of life that was rapidly disappearing even as Hartley painted it.
