Gargrave Councillors Praise "Peaceful" Appleby Traveller Passage Through Village

Gargrave Councillors Praise "Peaceful" Appleby Traveller Passage Through Village

05 June 2026

Parish council leaders in Gargrave have praised the 'mutual respect' shown between residents and travellers during the annual transit to the Appleby Horse Fair

Members of Gargrave Parish Council have expressed immense satisfaction during a formal community review session, following the peaceful passage of dozens of traveller families through the village over the bank holiday period. Gargrave traditionally serves as a vital resting and watering hub for horse-drawn bow-tops, traditional living wagons, and modern motorised caravans navigating the long northward migration toward the historic Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria. Parish leaders highlighted that extensive pre-planning meetings involving localised liaison officers, landowners, and RSPCA representatives ensured that designated temporary grazing verges were utilised correctly. Councillors publicly thanked both the travelling community and local residents for maintaining a spirit of absolute mutual respect, noting that community safety teams completed their scheduled clean-up operations yesterday morning with zero incidents of littering or anti-social friction reported.
