Firearms Licensing Enforcement Rules and Fees Increase Implemented

Firearms Licensing Enforcement Rules and Fees Increase Implemented

05 June 2026

Dales landowners and sport shooters are being reminded that stricter regulations and a national hike in firearms licensing fees are now legally active

The National Gamekeepers' Organisation has issued a comprehensive briefing to its regional members across the Yorkshire Dales, following the formal statutory implementation of a national increase in firearms and shotgun certification fees. The newly enacted Home Office guidelines represent the first major financial modernisation of the licensing framework in several years, raising the cost of a standard grant or renewal by significant percentages. Government ministers argue the increased revenue is legally ring-fenced to help cash-strapped police forces streamline vetting infrastructure, update medical background check protocols, and clear substantial processing backlogs. However, upland estate managers and independent gamekeepers have voiced intense concerns today, warning that layering increased financial burdens and complex administrative compliance on rural businesses further squeezes law-abiding fells conservationists who rely on firearms for lawful wildlife management and predator control.
