Council Proposes Major Overhaul to Controversial Home-to-School Transport Policy

Council Proposes Major Overhaul to Controversial Home-to-School Transport Policy

09 September 2026

North Yorkshire Council has unveiled major proposed changes today to its home-to-school transport policy, following significant rural feedback from families across the Dales

Executive members announced a fresh review today after the current policy—which only funds transport to a child's single nearest school—caused widespread concern across rural Dales catchments where village pupils often attend traditional community secondary schools.

The updated proposals released today aim to provide greater flexibility for families living in isolated rural patches, ensuring pupils retain access to transport for geographically appropriate secondary schools across Craven, Richmondshire, and Wensleydale.

Senior councillors confirmed today that the proposed revisions will go before the council's executive committee for formal consideration next week.
