Campaigners Demand Proof of Cost Savings from Controversial Home-to-School Transport Policy

Campaigners Demand Proof of Cost Savings from Controversial Home-to-School Transport Policy

17 September 2026

Parent campaigners across the Dales have issued an urgent demand to North Yorkshire Council today, urging leaders to "show me the money" regarding savings claimed from recent home-to-school transport changes

Campaigners from the Save Ordinary School Transport group (STAG) addressed council leaders this morning, challenging claims that limiting funded bus travel to a child's single nearest school would save £3 million annually.

Parents highlighted that the policy has forced Dales pupils away from traditional community secondary schools across Craven, Wensleydale, and Richmondshire onto unsafe walking routes and costly private transport.

Scrutiny members confirmed today that updated financial evidence and policy adjustments will be formally reviewed ahead of executive committee decisions.
