Initial inspections of the landslide near the summit of the Buttertubs Pass have revealed that the road's sub-base has been completely hollowed out by a "subterranean water burst." It wasn't just a surface slip; a six-meter cavity now exists beneath the tarmac. Engineers from North Yorkshire Council are moving heavy piling equipment to the site this afternoon. The road is expected to be closed for at least 14 days, cutting off the most direct route for local farmers and tourists. All traffic is being diverted via the B6270 through Muker and the A684 via Garsdale.
