Competing bands march a short distance down Main Street from Beck Head and then end up in the Market Square, where they play to an adjudicator and audience.
Bands are judged on how well they march, not on the music they are playing while marching.
In recent years, competitions have moved from the traditional format of March, Hymn, and Test Piece to more entertainment-style programmes. However, most bands still include at least a March and a Hymn, as this appeals to a wide audience.
At the end of the contest, after all the performances but before results are announced, all the bands come together to play Marches and Hymns. This is led by a conductor from one of the competing bands.
The popular musical event has been running since 1988 and attracts bands from across the North of England.
